Home Remedies For Cut Pads

1. First Aid For Cutpads:

Remove the fragments or foreign objects such as metal shards or glass in the pads. Spraying the paw with a hose or washing the paw in cold water may help extricate tiny particles. Clean the wound with liquid hand soap or non-irritating antiseptic solution such as dilute chlorhexidine solution. Use a towel or cloth to clean the wound.

2. Prevent Licking:

Use a self-sticking product (such as Well & Good or Vetwrap) to wrap the entire wound. Never forget to cover up with gauze or bandage the wound and squirt it with an anti-lick product (for ex., bitter apple) to protect the dog from licking it. Alternatively, you can make your dog wear an Elizabethan collar (e-collar) until the area is healed. Another option is covering the affected paw with a dog booty or clean sock.

3. Herbal Remedies:

Calendula may be used internally or topically to support the healing of open or torn wounds and to prevent infection. In calendula gel or spray, soak a gauze pad and tape it over the wound for 2 - 3 days, or apply calendula salve oil on the wound. Simply, add 1/2 cup of the fresh dried calendula ?owers in one quart of fresh water in a stainless steel cooking vessel. Heat the vessel and allow steeping until cool. Strain the water through a sieve and you have a fine, yellow extract that can be applied freely to dog paw cuts.

Mix together 1/2 teaspoon Echinacea/goldenseal tincture, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in 1 pint of water. Wash out the fresh wounds and bruises with large amounts of this solution. If the dogs have a draining abscess, clean it with Echinacea/goldenseal solution. While handling an abscess always wear latex gloves.
