Bombay Cat History

In 1965 a breeder Nikki Horner from Louisville, Kentucky developed a miniature black partner Bombay cat breed. This breed was officially registered in 1970 by Cat Fanciers’ Association and in 1979 by The International Cat Association.

It is created from cross-bred between black American Shorthairs and sable Burmese cats.

Bombay Cat Health Problems

Generally, Bombay cats are a healthy breed but suffer from some hereditary health issues. Some common health problems which affect Bombay cats include:

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM):

HCM is a heart disease in cats caused due to thickening of heart muscle. This cause thromboembolism, heart failure and occasionally sudden death.

  • Symptoms – Difficulty breathing, abnormal heart sounds, weak pulse, lethargy and loss of appetite.
  • Treatment – Medication will help to manage HCM, nitroglycerine can be applied to the skin for absorption.

Autosomal dominant Polycystic kidney disease:

It is a hereditary disease which affects certain breeds. This disorder can identify through the gene test.

  • Symptoms – Vomiting enlarged kidneys, lethargy, depression and loss of weight.
  • Treatment – Less phosphorus and protein diet is recommended, antacid and anti-nausea drugs are recommended.

Hypokalaemia:

Hypokalaemia is a deficiency of potassium in blood plasma.

  • Symptoms – Muscle pain, dull coat, weight loss, muscle wasting and lethargy.
  • Treatment – Medication to control vomiting and diarrhoea.

Breathing issues:

Breathing issues are caused due to respiratory distress in which your cat will suffer from both inhaling and exhaling.

  • Symptoms – Panting, laboured breathing, rapid breathing, coughing, lethargy, shaking and retching.
  • Treatment – Medication will help with breathing issues.

Excessive tearing:

Anything from serious illness to a simple cold may cause excessive tearing.

  • Symptoms – Conjunctivitis, Corneal disorders, Watery, tearing eyes and Dry eye.
  • Treatment – Medication and antibiotics.

Feeding Bombay Kittens
