Beagles shed moderately as they have considerably short hair. In general, shedding means dropping of old fur and growth of new fur.

The fur life-cycle follows like this: grow -> rest -> fall. This double-coated breed has two coats of fur:  soft and dense under-coat; rough and water-repellent outer coat.

During the fall and beginning of spring, they shed high on the rating scale. However, like all dog breeds, they shed mildly throughout the year.

It is very difficult to train a Beagle puppy. You can follow the given training tips while training your Beagle puppy.

The key points are:

• Most importantly, it must be borne in mind by Beagle dog owners that Beagles are hunting dogs. So, training the dog to obey whenever it’s called for stands foremost.
• You should keep your dog within a security fence for its safety and adequate exercise to assure its satisfaction is also important
• Beagles have progressed from the level of hunting dogs and their energy levels will be phenomenally high. Keeping this in mind, the owner/trainer must arrange for play sessions coupled with exercises to monitor whether the dog is aggressive or not.
• It is extremely vital for you to train the Beagle in such a way that it does not discard your words or show disrespect. Definitely, teach the right words to your Beagle such that it learns it and builds that respectful mindset within and obeys your instructions

Since beagles are double coated breeds, shaving will definitely cause damage to the skin and coat. It is generally not advisable to shave double-coated dog breeds. The hair growth may be slow after shaving and the skin-resistance to cold and heat will be affected.

The double coated dogs, during the end of springtime, shed their undercoat largely to be prepared for warm summer with light and scanty upper coat. Hence the decision to shave a double coated dog must be done only in extreme conditions and under vet’s advice.

The common diseases that a Beagle puppy faces are: epilepsy, hypothyroidism, chondrodystrophy, retinal atrophy, corneal dystrophy and glaucoma Other rare diseases that affect a Beagle puppy are: hip dysplasia where stiffness and pain in the rear legs after exercising, neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration, and immune-mediated polygenic arthritis.

◊ Epilepsy

The symptoms of epilepsy in a Beagle puppy

• Drooling
• Staring into space
• Walking in an odd and confused manner
• Fainting and hardening limbs

Treatment can be done by giving medicines like

• Potassium bromide
• Phenobarbital bromide
• Clonazepam
• Valproic acid
• Clorazepate
• Other time-tested methods like acupuncture
• Diet changes can even be applied to get the desired results

◊ Hypothyroidism

The signs of hypothyroidism, present in a Beagle puppy can be noted through

• Depression
• Lethargy
• Exercise intolerance
• Reluctance
• These dogs have a tendency to gain weight without an increase in appetite. The puppy will also have changes in its skin and hair colors, neuromuscular system and reproductive system.

Treatment

Treatment of hypothyroidism is done with the use of synthetic thyroid hormone, given orally two times a day. However, the dog must receive continual treatment throughout its life.

◊ Chondrodystrophy

The symptoms of chondrodystrophy in Beagles:

Usually, the affected Beagle dogs will have an abnormally small appearance. Moreover, when they are growing, they will end up developing deformed legs and spine. Their legs will be too short than that of a normal dog.

These affected puppies will experience walking difficulty and undergo spells of pain during the time of growth of their legs.

Mostly, the front legs of chondrodystrophic dogs remain affected but even their rear legs, spine, and skull could show signs of chondrodysplasia.

Treatment for chondrodystrophy:

Chondrodystrophy is a disease that can also happen in Beagles. The range of the disease could from mild to massive levels

Mildly affected and moderately afflicted dogs are given anti-inflammatory drugs to control and reduce the pain

In severe cases, despite mostly multiple deformities that exist, the pain felt by the puppy can be intense. In these cases, euthanasia is also deployed.

◊ Retinal Atrophy

Beagle dog breed is also highly prone to suffer from progressive retinal atrophy.

Symptoms

• Dilated pupils
• Night blindness
• Unable to see clearly in the good bright light
• Affected Liver
• Obesity
• Cataract
• The sudden blindness that happens due to sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS)

Treatment

The nature of retinal atrophy is mostly inherited and can also happen due to aging.

There has not yet been a definitive curative being found. However, some approaches that are followed include:

Affected Beagles are given Burdock (Arctium sp.) Bilberry (Vaccinium mortals)

• Milk Thistle (Silybum sp.)
• Zinc
• Lutein and Mixed Carotenoids
• Vitamin A, Vitamin C and also Vitamin E
• Mixtures Containing Glycerium
• Hamamelis
• Phosphorus Symphytum

◊ Corneal dystrophy

Generally, Beagles are affected with a mild to moderate level of corneal dystrophy.

The symptoms of corneal dystrophy 

• Formation of white or greyish cloud in the center of the eye
• Irritation in the eyes leading to rubbing and itching.

Treatment

Normally, veterinarians recommend high fiber and a low-fat diet for the affected Beagles. Topical acid treatment could be recommended where it can be done once or twice make the dog feel better.

This treatment will help in dissolving the mineral deposits, responsible for causing ulcers. Beagle dogs suffering from an advanced stage of corneal dystrophy are mostly recommended to undergo surgical removal of mineral deposits.

◊ Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disorder that affects many breeds of dogs, including Beagles.

Symptoms of primary or secondary glaucoma:

• Excessive tearing
• Squinting
• Blinking
• Pawing regularly at its eyes and pawing at its head or eyes. This results in pain and headache problems
• Eye bulging and reddening of the sclera (whites of the eyes)
• Secondary glaucoma is caused due to various health issues that develop over a period of time

Treatment

The efficient management of glaucoma is most important. It can be done through regular visits to the veterinarian for tracking the pressure level in the affected eye.

This will avoid the continuity of fluid formation and also ensure that the unaffected eye of the Beagle will stay healthy. Veterinarians give relevant medication to limit the fluid buildup or reduce the production of aqueous humor fluid.

◊ Hip dysplasia

Beagles are also more prone to hip dysplasia, a genetic disease.

The symptoms of this disease comprise of:

• Difficulty to walk or run with an altered gait
• Avoiding movements that need flexion of the rear legs
• Stiffness and pain in the rear legs after exercising and on first rising in the morning
• Climbing stairs becomes very difficult
• Some dogs limp and show reluctance to participate in normal daily activities, including walks

There is no specific treatment for curing hip dysplasia disease in Beagles but you can reduce the pain through exercise, proper diet and follow Winston’s Joint System (a combination of three natural food supplements).

◊ Neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration

Within a matter of a few weeks (3-4) from its birth, a Beagle gets NCCD.

The symptoms of neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration disorder in Beagles are:

• Cerebellar ataxia
• Wide-based stance
• Loss of balance

Dysmetric gait with an inability to regulate rate and range of movement are also noticeable. There is no change in the alertness of the affected puppies.

Neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration is a hereditary, progressive and degenerative disease. There is no curative treatment for this disease to date.

◊ Immune-mediated polygenic arthritis

This may happen to the puppy even at an early age. Hereditary conditions cause the immune-mediated polygenic arthritis and defects in the multiple gene loci.

At times, treatment is through steroid drugs for relief from this disease and it cures. The guarantee of complete cure from this disease condition is not possible and it depends on the stage or level of the disease and various other factors.
