This Is Not Goodbye
- Artist – Sidewalk Prophets
- Album – Live Like That
- Year – 2012
This song opens up about handling the loss of a beloved companion even if that’s not it talks about.
“This is Not a Goodbye” by Sidewalks Prophets offer the listeners a chance to say goodbye to a dear companion.
The verses of this song were inspired by Philippians 1:3-11. “It’s not goodbye for posterity but only for now,
My dear heart, heal and heal and this is what I want from you now.”
The time has come for you to leave
It’s so hard to let you go
But in this life, I know you have to be who you were made to beAs you step out on the road I’ll say a prayer
So that in my heart you always will be thereThis is not goodbye
I know we’ll meet again
So let your life begin
‘Cause this is not goodbye
It’s just “I love you” to take with you
Until you’re home again The stirring in your soul has left you wondering
Should you stay or turn around
Well, just remember that your dreams they are a promise
That you were made to change the world
So don’t let fear stop you now ‘causeThis is not goodbye
I know we’ll meet again
So let your life begin
‘Cause this is not goodbye
It’s just “I love you” to take with you
Until you’re home again I know the brightest star above
Was created by the One who loved
More than we’ll ever know
To guide you when you’re lost What started as a still, small voice
Is raging now and your only choice
Is to follow who you are
So follow who you are ‘cause
This is not goodbye
I know we’ll meet again
Oh
This is not goodbye
I know we’ll meet again
So let your life begin
‘Cause this is not goodbye
It’s just “I love you” to take with you
Until you’re home
It is “I love you” to take with you
Until you’re home
It is “I love you” to take with you
Until you’re home again

For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful baby
You’re the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You’re the one who saw me through through it allYou were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved meYou gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by youYou were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved meYou were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You’ve been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of youYou were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved meYou were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved meI’m everything I am
Because you loved me
I will Remember You
- Artist – Sarah McLachlan
- Album – The Brothers McMullen
- Year – 1995
This song gives you an outlet to express your desire and in that process keep your beloved dog alive in your memory.
When a loved companion passes away, reliving their memories will give us an opportunity to continue to show our love for them.
Don’t let your life pass you by,
Weep not for the memories
Remember the good times that we had?
I let them slip away from us when things got bad.
How clearly I first saw you smilin’ in the sun
Want to feel your warmth upon me
I want to be the oneI will remember you, will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memoriesI’m so tired but I can’t sleep
Standin’ on the edge of something much to deep
It’s funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word
We are screaming inside, but we can’t be heardI will remember you, will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memoriesI’m so afraid to love you
But more afraid to lose
Clinging to a past that doesn’t let me choose
Once there was a darkness
Deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me lifeI will remember you, will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memoriesI will remember you, will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I feel you walk beside me
I know I’ll see you again When I’m lost, I’m missing you like crazy
And I tell myself I’m so blessed
To have had you in my life, my lifeI’ll see you again
You never really left
I feel you walk beside me
I know I’ll see you again When I had the time to tell you
I never thought I’d live to see the day
When the words I should have said
Would come to haunt me
In my darkest hour I tell myself
I’ll see you againI’ll see you again
You never really left
I feel you walk beside me
I know I’ll see you againI’ll see you again
You never really left
I feel you walk beside me
I know I’ll see you again I will see you again
I’ll see you again
I miss you like crazy
You’re gone but not forgotten

Someday I’ll see you again

Never leave you, yeah
Gone but not forgotten
I feel you by my side

Cracker Jack
- Artist – Dolly Parton
- Album – Jolene
- Year – 1974
Once again another gem of a song from the Queen of Country Music, Dolly Parton rocks. From the album “Jolene”, this song shares the memories of a woman who happily remembers her longtime companion, a dog fondly named Cracker Jack.
Once I had a little dog
I called him Cracker Jack
He had a spot around one eye
That looked just like a patch
His legs were way too long
And he was awkward as could be
He wasn’t much to look at
But he looked alright to me
I found him by the river bank
Just wondering about
He was cold and hungry
And his ribs were sticking out
I snapped my fingers, whistled
When he came, I picked him up
I was just a kid, and Cracker Jack was just a pup
I took him home and fed him
Till he couldn’t eat no more
I took him to my room
And put a blanket on the floor
After that beside my bed
Is where he’d always sleep
Each night in my prayers
I prayed the lord his soul to keep[Chorus]
Cracker Jack
The best friend that I ever had was Cracker Jack
But he was more than that
A play mate, a companion
He was love and understanding
That was Cracker Jack
The best friend that I ever had was Cracker Jack
But he was more than that
Everything a kid could want
I had in Cracker Jack[Verse 2]
Cracker Jack would run to meet me
After school each day
He’d jump and wag his tail
And look at me as if to say
“I love you and I’ve missed you and I’m glad you’re home again”
I knew just how you felt ’cause me and Cracker Jack was friends
Through the woods and fields
We would often roam about
And when we got in trouble
We would help each other out
I could run almost as fast as Cracker Jack could run
We had a lot in common and we had a lot of fun
He was always with me when I was growing up
We shared each other’s good times
And we shared each other’s love
He only lives in memories now
But often I think back
To the days of childhood
The days of Cracker Jack[Chorus]
Cracker Jack
The best friend that I ever had was Cracker Jack
But he was more than that
A play mate, a companion
He was love and understanding
That was Cracker Jack
The best friend that I ever had was Cracker Jack
But he was more then that
Everything a kid could want
I had in Cracker Jack
It’s Just a Dog
- Artist – Mo Pitney
- Album – Behind This Guitar
- Year – 2016
For those who miss their dog, the loss can be irreplaceable. Mo Pitney brings out all these emotions in this track. He has become famous for his exceptional ability to write soul-touching and unbelievably honest songs.
“It’s Just a Dog” song is no exception.
This song engages the listener with the long-lasting relationship between the singer and his dog. One frightful night, Mo finds himself with the reality of living a life without his trusted partner.
Go, get your pooch right now and watch Mo Pitney’s “It’s Just A Dog.”
Saw her walking on the side of the highway alone
It was raining like hell and I kept telling myself
“not my problem, keep on driving, just like everybody else.”
Why should I be the one pulling over on the shoulder at night?
It’s just a dog, right? From the cab of my truck, to the foot of my bed
To a new pair of boots that she chewed in shreds
Digging holes in the yard, chasing cars down the street
Till one got her and when I found her, I thought it hit me
Took half of my savings to save her, and I didn’t think twice
It’s just a dog, right?Just an old mutt riding shotgun, getting my seats all muddy
Just the one who I come home to, just my best fishin’ buddyWe were walking that spring in the sand on the beach
You know she was the reason, Amy walked up to me
She lost her place on the couch, but she kept her cool
She was crazy about Amy and she knew I was too
And the night that girl left me, she kept me from losing my mind
But it’s just a dog, right? It’s 83° today and man I can hardly wait
To get this truck down to the lake, I bet the bass’ are hittin’
Boats in my rear view mirror, got my… tackle box and all my gear
The wind is right, the sky is clear, there’s only one thing missin’Just an old mutt riding shotgun, getting my seats all muddy
It just hit me she’s not with me like she was this past Sunday
Why am I pulling over on the shoulder with tears in my eyes?
It’s just a dog, right?
She was just a dog, right?

I Will Always Be With You
- Artist – Jessi Corti and Sheena Easton
- Album – All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 (movie)
- Year – 1996
“I Will Always Be With You” song pays rich praise to an eternal bond that will stand the test of time. It speaks about the lasting friendship between a dog and an adult and how death does not change the feelings of love.
Talented singers Jessie Corti and Sheena Easton recorded this for the movie “All Dogs Go To Heaven 2” in 1996.
I will always be with you.
Makes no difference where
your road takes you to.
Even if we’re apart,
now we’re joined at the heart.
Though our moment may be gone
you and i will still live on.
I will always be with you.
I’ll be by your side whatever you do.
Other memories may fade,
but the ones that we made
are eternal as a star.
Now I’m part of who you are.
And I’ll be there with you in the sound of your laughter.
I’ll be in the tears you cry,
’cause the way you and I
have touched one another
doesn’t end with goodbye.
I will always be with you,
like a guardian angel, constant and true.
When you’re lost in the night
and you can’t see the light
my love will see you through.
I will always be there.
You have me there.
I will always be with you.

Little Boys Grow Up And Dogs Get Old
- Artist – Luke Bryan
- Album – Kill the Lights
- Year – 2015
The main reason for grief is the shorter life expectancy of dogs. Luke Bryan talks about growing up with dogs. He then goes on to talk about leaving home as an adult and finally saying goodbye to a dear friend.
He said, “son he’s yours from now on”
Bandit looked at me and he cocked his head
Slept at night on the foot of my bed
All that year, I can see him still
Chasing after me, nipping at my heels
Down to the bus stop, my new best friend
Still waiting right there when I got home againAnd I thought we would be together
Go on and on just like that, forever
But I was young back then
I guess I just didn’t know
Little boys grow up and dogs get oldHe was my sidekick through thick and thin
And he’d bark at my fish when I’d reel ’em in
Summers came and went and we grew like weeds
And I don’t know if I raised him or he raised meAnd I thought we would be together
Go on and on just like that, forever
But I was young back then
How was I supposed to know
Little boys grow up and dogs get oldHe was fourteen when I left for Tennessee
And he came down the front porch steps a little slow
I got down to hug his neck
Said “you take care of Mom and Dad, ’til I get home”
“And be a good boy”
“Now you be a good boy”And I thought we would be together
Go on and on just like that, forever
But I was young back then
God I wish I didn’t know
Little boys grow up and dogs get oldHe was fourteen when I left for Tennessee
And he came down the front porch steps a little slow
I got down to hug his neck
Said “you take care of Mom and Dad, ’til I get home”
“And be a good boy”
“Now you be a good boy”And I thought we would be together
Go on and on just like that, forever
But I was young back then
God I wish I didn’t know
Little boys grow up and dogs get old
Shannon
- Artist – Henry Gross
- Year – 1976
No one other than Henry can talk authentically about grieving a dog. A family mourns the death of a dog in this song. Henry had a dog named Shannon but sources say, he wrote this song when he came to know of the death of Carl Wilson’s Irish Setter.
Another day is at end
Mama says she’s tired again
No one can even begin to tell her
I hardly know what to say
But maybe it’s better that way
If Papa were here I’m sure he’d tell her
Shannon is gone I heard
She’s drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she’ll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our backyard
Mama tries hard to pretend
That things will get better again
Somehow she’s keepin’ it all inside her
But finally the tears fill our eyes
And I know that somewhere tonight
She knows how much we really miss her
Shannon is gone I heard
She’s drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she’ll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our back yard …
Just like the one in our back yard …
Love And Mercy
- Artist – Brian Wilson
- Album – Brian Wilson
- Year – 1988
The opening track of Brian Wilson’s debut album, Love and Mercy was credited to Alexandra Morgan, therapist Eugene Landy, and Brian himself. The song had Brian on the vocals and lyrics included some extra words unused in the track.
This song failed to chart both in the UK and in the United States of America.
I was sittin’ in a crummy movie with my hands on my chin
Oh the violence that occurs seems like we never win
Love and mercy that’s what you need tonight
So, love and mercy to you and your friends tonight
I was lyin’ in my room and the news came on t.v.
A lotta people out there hurtin’ and it really scares me
Love and mercy that’s what you need tonight
So, love and mercy to you and your friends tonight
I was standin’ in a bar and watchin’ all the people there
Oh the lonliness in this world well it’s just not fair
Oooooo-ooooooo-ooooooo
Oooooo-ooooooo-ooooooo-ooooooo-ooooooo
Ahhhhh-ahhhhhh-ahhhhhh-ohhhhhh-ohhhhhh
Hey love and mercy that’s what you need tonight
So, love and mercy to you and your friends tonight
Love and mercy that’s what you need tonight
Love and mercy tonight
Love and mercy
Old Friends
- Artist – Simon & Garfunkel
- Album – Simon & Garfunkel: Old Friends
Dogs can’t speak but they do have their own language. If you watch her closely, you could easily tell whether she is happy or sad by looking at her body language.
Simon & Garfunkel’s Old Friends is a delight to listen to.
Old friends, old friends,
Sat on their parkbench like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
of the high shoes of the old friends
Old friends, winter companions, the old men
Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sun
The sounds of the city sifting through trees
Settles like dust on the shoulders of the old friends
Can you imagine us years from today,
Sharing a parkbench quietly
How terribly strange to be seventy
Old friends, memory brushes the same years,
Silently sharing the same fears
Death Is Not The End
- Artist – Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave
- Album – Murder Ballads
- Year – 1996
Murder Ballads received a lot of praise for their song content. The song “Death Is Not The End” was penned by the legendary lyricist Bob Dylan.
This cover shows Minogue and Cave complementing each other with their exceptional singing talent.
When you’re sad and when you’re lonely
And you haven’t got a friend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all that you held sacred
Falls down and does not mend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end
Not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
When you’re standing on the crossroads
That you cannot comprehend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all your dreams have vanished
And you don’t know what’s up the bend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end
Not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
When the storm clouds gather round you
And heavy rains descend
Just remember that death is not the end
And there is no one there to comfort you
With a helping hand to lend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end
Not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
For the tree of life is growing
Where the spirit never dies
And the bright light of salvation
Up in dark and empty skies
When the cities are on fire
With the burning flesh of men
Just remember that death is not the end
And you search in vain to find
Some law-abiding citizen
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end
Not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
We’ll Meet Again
- Artist – Johnny Cash
- Album – American IV: The Man Comes Around
- Year – 2002
There is hardly anyone without a dream. Some of us believe that we will reunite and stay with our beloved ones after our death.
This plan looks skeptical but still, faith doesn’t fade quite easily.
We’ll meet again
don’t know where- don’t know when.
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.
Keep smiling through just like you always do.
Til’ the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.
And will you please say hello to the folks that I know
tell them that I won’t be long.
And they’ll be happy to know, that you saw me go
I was singing this song.
We’ll meet again.
Don’t know where- Don’t know when.
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.
Yeah we’ll meet again
and I don’t know where and I don’t know when
but I do know that we’ll meet again some sunny day.
So hunny, keep on smiling through
just like you always do.
Till’ the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.
And would you please say hello
to all the folks that I know.
And tell em I won’t be long.
They’ll be happy to know
that as you saw me go
I was singing this song.
We’ll meet again
Don’t know where
Don’t know when.
But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day
In A Little While
- Artist – U2
- Album – All That You Can’t Leave Behind
- Year – 2000
U2 performed this song on his Elevation tour. Apparently, this song is still remembered as the song that Ramone of The Ramones finally listened before breathing his last in 2001.
In a little while
Surely you’ll be mine
In a little while, I’ll be there
In a little while
This hurt will hurt no more
I’ll be home, love
When the night takes a deep breath
And the daylight has no air
If I crawl, if I come crawling home
Will you be there?
In a little while
I won’t be blown by every breeze
Friday night running to Sunday on my knees
That girl, that girl she’s mine
Well I’ve known her since
Since she was
A little girl with Spanish eyes
When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by
Oh uh my, my how you’ve grown
Well it’s been, it’s been a little while
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Slow down my beating heart
A man dreams one day to fly
A man takes a rocket ship into the skies
He lives on a star that’s dying in the night
And follows in the trail, the scatter of light
Turn it on
Turn it on, you turn me on
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Johnny Stewart’s Poem On Beau
Actor Johnny Stewart’s golden retriever named Beau was the star of the show. In the beginning, the sad poem aroused curiosity amongst the audience but as the recitation progresses the mood turns somber.
All pet parents would know for sure how missing a loved one pains.
He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn’t come at all.
When he was young
He never learned to heel
Or sit or stay,
He did things his way.
Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn’t drag.
He’d dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I’d grab him, he’d turn and bite me.
He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn’t read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.
He set the house on fire
But the story’s long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.
On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
Because our bones were sore.
He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.
But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.
We are early-to-bedders at our house — I guess I’m the first to retire.
And as I’d leave the room he’d look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.
He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I’d give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I’d fish it out with a smile.
And before very long He’d tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner In no time at all.
And there were nights when I’d feel him Climb upon our bed
And lie between us,
And I’d pat his head.
And there were nights when I’d feel this stare
And I’d wake up and he’d be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I’d feel him sigh and I think I know the reason why.
He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he’d be glad to have me near.
And now he’s dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
And I pat his head.
And there are nights when I think I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
But he’s not there.
Oh, how I wish that wasn’t so,
I’ll always love a dog named Beau.
